Storytelling: How to Tell Your Story as a Small Business
The connection between people and brands has changed. More than "What" a brand has to offer, people are interested in "Why" the brand exists and "Who" is behind that business. However, in a world dominated by social media, where new stories are shared all the time, many brands struggle to understand how to tell their stories effectively.
If that's your case, we've separated a checklist for you to understand if your storytelling is on the right track.
Recognise your story
Not everything is storytelling.
True storytelling is about understanding what makes your business unique. And so this story will be unique too. Your storytelling should put together the factors that will shape your brand in the minds of your audience when you interact with them.
Know your audience
Who might be interested in your story? Don't waste your amazing storytelling on the wrong platforms. Know the places where your audience is: social media, blogs, events, etc.
If necessary, make sure you create several formats to distribute your story in different channels. For example, you can have the same story told on Youtube, in your Newsletter or on your Instagram, and although they all tell the same message, the format will always be adapted to the channel and its audience.
Be real
Forget about going viral and focus on reaching the right audience!
Your story must carry your brand’s truth. Don't exaggerate to thrill the audience, let alone invent a story that isn't yours. Be real. The truer your story, the more your ideal audience will identify with it.
Don't be afraid to innovate
As the business grows and your brand evolves, you must continue to add more chapters to your story. Storytelling is a great way to make an emotional connection with your audience, and as you keep them up to date with your achievements, they will feel part of it.
Go beyond
Tell your story through your consumer experience. Look for elements that relate to your concept and storytelling in all aspects of your business - packaging, events, shopping experience, and tone of voice on social media. For example: is your product traditional in another country? Bring colours, words and elements that refer to this country. Is your business family-owned, growing across generations? Try to create packaging that refers to the gifts exchanged by your family at the time - and don't forget to add a note telling your consumer this story. Or, how about creating a playlist with songs that remind you of the different phases of your business? Make your audience live your story, not just read it on your website.
There are endless possibilities for good storytelling! If you believe in your story, but need some creativity to turn it into something special, give us a shout! We have special packages that are designed according to what you need :)
